Oil on Canvas

I have always studied composition and one of the best teachers of is Henri Cartiér Bresson, a very revered photographer of the early 20th century.  This painting's structure and subject matter is based on his b/w photo of this Paris Café scene.  So thank you to the master for his inspiration.

I imagine a relationship between the two characters, the older woman and the hip chic in the foreground.  I think as I paint, what does Veronica (I just named the older woman) going through in her life? I imagine her background and why she might be there this monring gazing at the young beauty down the bench. Meanwhile, the passive beauty vibrates brightly in her lemon yellow dress against the background in predominant shades of blue and butter yellow. With her fingers to her lips, Marilyn (ok I named her ) is symboling concern.  She stares at her paper oblivious to the warm gaze of Veronica. I imagine, what is her life? Why is she troubled? And all of a sudden its a whole story in a single moment! That's my favorite kind of narrative painting.  The complementary colors, the colors of morning light create the contemplative atmosphere.
